Lab-grown Retinas for Vision Loss Disease

Vision loss is associated with retinal problems. Macular degeneration is one of the most common eye disorders that leads to vision loss. Although the disease is incurable, vision loss can be delayed after diagnosis.
Recently, researchers from the University of Wisconsin-Madison have developed lab-grown human eye cells from stem cells resembling a neonate’s retina. It is a significant step towards employing lab-grown retina cells for blindness reversal. During the research, they found that these cells can form synaptic connections. They further confirmed that photoreceptors, including rod & cone cells, were forming synapses. As rod and cone cells are lost during retinitis pigmentosa, age-related macular degeneration, and certain eye injuries, these lab-grown eye cells will significantly help people suffering from vision loss.
