4th H2 forum: Empowering the future of hydrogen

February 19 @ 8:00 am - February 20 @ 5:00 pm

Supporting Enterprises Throughout their Journey to Sustainable Future

2023 was an eventful year, with global climate protection and sustainable energy supply as hot topics of discussion at international summits and conferences. Even in COP28, the nations agreed to progressively move away from fossil fuels in the energy sector by 2050. Considering the current geopolitical risks & evolving trends along with our commitment to future-proofing businesses, we’ve been striving to be a true value partner for enterprises across their pathway to sustainability, for which we are buzzing with anticipation as we’ll be exhibiting at

The event is scheduled for February 19–20, 2024, at ECC Berlin and will be a hybrid conference where top-class hydrogen experts worldwide gather to strategize and advance the widespread adoption of hydrogen across various sectors. The agenda of this event is to decarbonize energy-intensive industries with hydrogen, optimize investments in hydrogen projects, understand the role of governments and the private sector in securing diverse supply chains for green hydrogen, and explore efficient electrolyzers and hydrogen core grids in the market.

Overview

In this eco-conscious era, almost all organizations, regardless of size and sector, are fervent in achieving sustainable development goals; and automotive companies are no exception. The mobility sector, the major contributor to global warming, has set a benchmark across other domains in terms of reducing carbon emissions phenomenally by introducing electric vehicles (EVs) in the market. The EV segment fits best for local transit passenger vehicles. However, for long-haul mass transportation, such as heavy-duty trucks, marine transportation, and aircraft, the key challenges accompanied by the current EV technologies are range anxiety, refueling time, additional payload of batteries, and higher maintenance cost, among others. Thus, fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) are gaining traction as the vehicle segment precisely aligns with the sustainability requirements and navigates the above-mentioned obstacles. Improved fuel cell technologies, mass-manufacturing of proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells, alkaline fuel cells (AFCs), and solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs), and accelerated efforts around clean hydrogen production are further bolstering the FCEV segment of the mobility sector.

In addition, certain essential but non-sustainable industries—also known as hard-to-abate sectors—such as steelmaking, cement, and petrochemical industries encounter limitations to direct electrification, particularly considering the current state of technology. Thus, clean electricity should be coupled with other carbon-free processes and energy sources, and green hydrogen has emerged as a potentially appropriate solution to decarbonize these sectors.

Last but not the least, hydrogen can be used as a feedstock to produce carbon-neutral alternative fuels such as synthetic methane/eLNG, renewable methanol, syngas, hydrotreated renewable diesel, FT diesel, and ammonia.

Global Green Hydrogen Landscape

In 2023, numerous innovative technologies & methodologies emerged, emphasizing the importance of reducing carbon emissions. Despite the considerable interest in clean hydrogen production projects, the transition from concept to commercialization was fractional. The key obstacles behind such a meager project conversion rate are hydrogen production cost, technology replacement, and infrastructure development.

The average production cost of green hydrogen is roughly $4–5/kg, approx. double the production costs for grey hydrogen. Green hydrogen production costs are associated with expensive electrolyzers and considerably higher round-the-clock (RTC) renewable energy prices.

Convincing companies in diversified industries to switch to clean hydrogen is no simple thing. As it stands, they lack an urgent economic incentive to abandon the millions and billions of dollars’ worth of fossil-fuel-burning assets they already have. Advocates have been trying to fix this by pushing lawmakers to introduce policies that would make clean hydrogen more attractive to buyers, like a carbon tax or advance market commitments. To fortify, the tax credit regulations issued by the Treasury Department and Internal Revenue Service to promote clean hydrogen production have urged global leading as well as emerging enterprises across diversified sectors to become resilient and sustainable.

Future Outlook

IeB experts have anticipated that around 15,000 kilotonnes of low- and zero-carbon hydrogen will be produced by 2030. These projections align with the IEA’s outlook over the same timeframe.
