US Administration Announces $62 Million Investment to Propel the Hydrogen Industry’s Growth

Last month, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced investing nearly $62 million in 20 projects across 15 states to accelerate next-gen clean hydrogen technologies. These initiatives, part of the Biden-Harris Administration’s Investing in America agenda, aim to advance hydrogen fueling infrastructure, develop hydrogen-powered port equipment, and improve processes critical for deploying hydrogen technologies. The projects will also prioritize community engagement to ensure that the benefits of the clean energy transition reach all Americans.

Clean hydrogen, a versatile energy carrier, can help decarbonize the steel industry, agriculture sector, and heavy-duty transportation. Thus, its development is crucial for reducing emissions and supporting America’s energy independence. The DOE’s investments align with the U.S. National Clean Hydrogen Strategy and Roadmap and are coordinated through the Hydrogen Interagency Task Force. These efforts also complement tax incentives under the Inflation Reduction Act, aiming to create tens of thousands of high-quality jobs and bolster U.S. leadership in clean energy.

The 20 planned projects to be funded are categorized into five key focus areas:

1. Components for Hydrogen Fueling of MD/HD Vehicles ($8.5 million): Four projects to develop advanced components for fueling hydrogen-powered vehicles.

2. Standardized Hydrogen Refueling Station of the Future ($40 million): Four projects to develop replicable, low-cost refueling stations for medium- and heavy-duty trucks.

3. Hydrogen Fuel Cell-Powered Port Equipment ($2.5 million): A project at the Port of Oakland to demonstrate hydrogen-powered container-handling equipment and mobile refueling.

4. Permitting and Safety for Hydrogen Deployment ($7 million): Seven projects to address challenges related to permitting and safety.

5. Equitable Hydrogen Technology Community Engagement ($4 million): Four projects aimed at improving community engagement and addressing concerns from disadvantaged communities.

Recognizing the importance of equity, $14 million has been allocated to ensuring community benefits. More than 20 minority-serving institutions will partner in these projects to implement Community Benefits Plans that create well-paying jobs and enhance local well-being. This is aligned with the Biden-Harris Administration’s Justice40 Initiative, furthering the goal of equitable access to clean energy solutions.
