EU Invests ∼€55 Million in Green Hydrogen Sector to Boost Clean Industrialisation in Namibia
Namibia has made a significant stride towards a sustainable future by formally endorsing three pivotal EU-funded initiatives. These programmes, integral to the EU’s Global Gateway strategy, will not only provide financial backing and regulatory counsel but also solidify Namibia’s position as a leading force in the burgeoning green hydrogen economy. The first programme, backed by €50 million from the EU, targets private sector investments across the green hydrogen value chain, including production, transportation, and storage, alongside downstream industries. This initiative will enhance Namibia’s role in the global energy sector and create opportunities for sustainable growth. A second initiative, in partnership with Germany, introduces a €2.7 million investment under the EU-Get.transform programme, focusing on expanding Namibia’s renewable energy generation capacity. This project seeks to increase access to renewable energy by offering decentralised energy solutions to remote areas, aligning with the country’s Harambee Prosperity Plan and Vision 2030. Lastly, the Namibia Green Hydrogen Programme, valued at €1.2 million, will establish an effective regulatory framework for the sector. Supported by Germany and the Netherlands, this programme exemplifies Team Europe’s commitment to helping Namibia achieve energy security and long-term economic prosperity. The partnership between Namibia and the EU highlights the importance of collaborative efforts in advancing green industrialisation and global energy transformation. As Namibia positions itself prominently on the global energy map, these programmes will be instrumental in driving sustainable development and meeting the country’s energy needs.
