A new rice variety that can withstand floods has been produced by the Agriculture Institute in Karaikal, Puducherry. The rice cultivar was produced with the cooperation of the Department of Biotechnology, Central government.

A group of scientists from the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru College of Agriculture and Research Institute created the rice variety KKL(R)2. ADT 46 and Swarna Sub 1 were crossed three times using the “Marker Assisted Backcross Method” to create the new variety KKL(R)2. The new rice variety is appropriate for the Samba season and matures in 135 days. This rice type, according to scientists, can withstand flash floods and 14 days of submersion during the tillering stage.

KKL(R)2 is the first Puducherry rice variety recommended by the Central Variety Release Committee (CVRC) for release. Scientists also mentioned that this rice variety is moderately resistant to pests, including white-backed brown hopper, brown plant hopper, and blast and brown spot.
