Shiseido—a Japanese multinational cosmetics company—has worked in close collaboration with the Norwegian University of Science & Technology to develop a novel measurement method that can analyze the three-dimensional face shape as well as the optical characteristics of facial skin, such as subsurface light scattering. Subsurface scattering light is an important factor for skin translucency. The beauty giant, along with its research partner, measured the facial skin of more than 1,000 women from the 20s to 70s using the new system. As a result, they discovered that the subsurface scattering light decreases with age and is associated with five factors, including melanin level and stratum corneum condition, skin moisture level, collagen status, and skin texture. The research was carried out by Shiseido’s R&D philosophy, “DYNAMIC HARMONY”, and their research aimed to realize the perfect skin for each individual.

The developed measurement system will help the Japanese beauty giant measure skin objectively as well as develop new products. It can redefine the beauty industry by helping each person achieve perfect skin. Further, the company will continue its study to explain the skin’s visual quality scientifically and quantitatively by leveraging and developing technologies, such as color science and optics, which have recently gained prominence in the digital world.
