To serve the North American lithium-ion battery industry, Indorama Ventures (IVL) and Capchem USA, a subsidiary of China’s Shenzhen Capchem Technology, are jointly reviewing the alternatives for constructing and running a carbonate solvent plant. The ethylene carbonate and associated derivatives that will be produced in the plants under this agreement are essential parts of the electrolyte solutions used in lithium-ion batteries. According to the companies, this new facility would “significantly benefit” the North American lithium-ion battery market, which relies on imports from Asia now due to the shift toward electric vehicles. The entry of Indorama’s Oxides and Derivatives business group into the lithium-ion battery market as a new competitive producer will strengthen its development into a specialty downstream manufacturer
