The same idea can be worded completely differently in a patent claim and in a 3GPP document. Finding a match usually means opening files one by one and hoping the right passage turns up.

So, what happens when a legal team needs that match quickly and will not accept a finding without a source?

Our client, an IP law firm, asked Ingenious e-Brain to identify where a specific claim feature was described in the 3GPP standards. They needed the passages, a view of where and when the idea was proposed, discussed, changed, or adopted, and a clear source for every finding. This was one of the early uses of our 3GPP Search & Intelligence Platform on live work, and we say plainly what it did and where it stops.

What Were the Key Hurdles the Client Encountered?

Claim language and standards language rarely match. A single phrase can miss the passage that matters, and the idea may sit across contributions, change requests, and specifications rather than in one place.

Manual review added to the problem. Opening files one at a time takes long, references can be overlooked, and notes easily get separated from their source. The client’s legal and technical teams would read the passages themselves, so a finding they could not check was of little use in a claim chart or a licensing discussion.

Timing also mattered. In SEP research, how a concept appeared and who raised it can affect how a finding is used.

How We Turned Slow Manual Review into a Faster, Source-Linked Search

Our analysts used the 3GPP Search & Intelligence Platform to work the way the standards are actually written. The claim feature was described in plain language, then broken into two or three ways a standard might refer to it. Each version went into its own concept row with alternative wording and proximity settings, so the search stayed broad enough to catch variations and focused enough to be useful.

Results were filtered by technical specification group, contributor, meeting, release and date. Highlighted passages were read in context without downloading files and the AI assisted in summarizing, comparing and explaining dense paragraphs with answers linked to the documents under review.

Every finding was then checked against the original 3GPP document before it reached the client. The AI acts as a quick first reader. Our analysts decide what a passage means, and nothing without a source goes to the client.

What Did the Engagement Unlock?

As a result, the client was able to:

  • Run fewer search rounds, because concept rows used the terminology found in the standards.
  • Avoid unnecessary downloads by judging a passage from the preview and highlighted matches.
  • See clearer timing, with filters showing where and when the idea appeared in the record.
  • Review evidence they could check, with each finding supplied with its passage and a link to the original document.

We have not run a formal time study, and we would rather say so than quote a number we cannot back up. What we can say is that the effort moved, with less time spent hunting for passages and more spent judging what they showed.

The platform does not decide whether a patent is essential or valid. That judgment stayed with our analysts and the client’s experts.
